Don’t let any students you know miss out on this opportunity!
Beginning immediately the Woodstock Moose Lodge is excepting applications for the 2009-2010 Youth Awareness Program participants. The Youth Awareness Program is a program offered by the Illinois Moose Association on an annual basis. The Youth Awareness program is open to all students in the area who are a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in High School. This program is not limited strictly to children of Moose members. This program gives each student the opportunity to win both a State Scholarship as well as one of Five National Scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $12,000!
Each year beginning in October the Illinois State Moose Association sets up different lodges to host a "Student Congress" where local high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors attend a class at a host lodge during which they are educated on various subjects that enable them to educate younger children. Subjects may include but are not limited to: drug awareness, alcohol abuse, self esteem, bullying, cyber bullying, hygiene, etc. During the course of the Association Student Congress the students focus on creating Moose "Kids Talks," short presentations they then personally deliver to groups of 4-to-9-year olds in their home towns. Adult experts are brought in to inspire where needed, but best of all, the students initiate their own ideas for Moose Kids Talks. They discuss and refine ways to empower children to choose health and resist danger. They will be challenged to become a part of "speaker's bureau," finding opportunities to speak with groups of children such as Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies, Bluebirds, elementary school or Sunday - school classes to name a few. The students will be asked to complete a minimum of three (3) Moose Kids Talks following the Student Congresses November through February. Participating students will be asked to report on these meetings.
All participants completing three “Kids Talks “will receive a $100 Savings Bond and have the opportunity to win a State Scholarship. Two Students from Illinois will be chosen to attend a sponsored trip to compete in the International Student Congress with other students from across the country. During the International Congress, five students will be selected by their peers to receive scholarships. The awards are:
1St Place: $12,000, 2nd Place: $8,000, 3rd Place: $5,000, 4th Place: $3,000, 5th Place: $2,000
The Woodstock Moose Lodge Community Service Committee will work with each student to help them find locations to speak as well as aid them in acquiring their supplies. If you know a student you would like to earn some money for college, earn some community service credit for their college applications, or know someone who wants to take part in fun event while meeting other students from across Illinois and across the country. Please contact Rosalie Vosburgh or myself as soon as possible. Anyone wishing to donate supplies, have a place to give a Kids Talk, or wish to help with transportation, we can always use your help.
